Matt normally heads out to Bruges once a year for a day or three, takes a book, then slowly bar hops around this historic medieval city in Belgium, sipping on fantastic beer, eating his body weight in cheese and reading his book. Over the years his come to love the city and the many bars, breweries and restaurants.
Matt spent a couple of days in Bruges this April and said to himself "Why not make a list of recommendation in Bruges of places to drink and eat that I like and share it with everyone?". So here is it, our ever growing and always updating list of places we suggest visiting when you are next in Bruges.
't Brugs Beertje / Kemelstraat 5, 8000 Brugge, Belgium

This specialist Belgian Beerhouse is a must visit. Opening its doors in 1983 and serving up an extensive menu of around 300 beers, including an outstanding range of aged Lambics, Imperial Stouts and Belgian Classics.
't Brugs Beertje is one of Matt's favourite drinking establishments in the world and especially in Belgium. This little bar tucked away down a side street close to the city centre is a must visit. The atmosphere is welcoming with locals and tourists flicking through the hefty beer menu on the tables, surrounded by traditional Belgium Brown Bar decor, dim lighting and wooden interior. You can sit down at a table, read a book, snack on the Cheese and Salami cubes, sip on rare Belgian Beers with classical music playing softly in the background and lose hours in this bar. The staff are always happy to help you select a beer if the menu is a little overwhelming for you.
Open daily from 4pm except Wednesdays when they are closed for a well deserved day off.

De Garre / De Garre 1, 8000 Brugge, Belgium

Down one of the smallest streets in Bruges and in the shadow of the Belfry lies De Garre, a historic Brown Bar with its own Triple that is apparently restricted to 3 servings per person.
The bar also boasts an impressive curated range of 100 Belgian Beers, with many in bottle but a great selection on tap. However, this blink and you’ll miss it bar is small, cosy and serves up the exclusive Tripel van De Garre, an 11% Belgian Triple brew by Brouwerij Van Steenberge. The beer in question arrives at the table in a unique thick-stemmed glass, on a paper doily, on a tray and with a little ramekin of cheese cubes. This presentation enhances the atmosphere and experience of De Garra, both the bar and the drink.
The detail put into their presentation of the beers, the well curated beer menu and the hum of chatter over classical music in an historic setting makes De Garre a truly one-off experience that you must try.
Open Monday to Thursday from 12pm to 7pm and Friday to Sunday 12pm to 11pm

2be Bar / Wollestraat 53, 8000 Brugge, Belgium

Bar, Bottle Shop and Mini Beer Museum all packed into this tourist focused establishment, with its beer walls, riverside terrace and beer memorabilia stacked bar.
The 2be Bar is situated right on the canal, where you can watch the world go by as you sit in their riverside terrace. Before you enter the bar for your drink, which has menus hanging from the ceiling in several languages to help you order, there is a large glass case with over a thousand Belgian Beers and their accompanying glassware for you to look over, however these are not for sale, so don’t spend too long admiring a beer that might not be available. The bar itself has 16 beers on tap for you that covers a wide range of Belgian styles which are available in flights allowing you to try several beers while sitting canal side.
Once you have finished up enjoying the keg beers make sure you pop into the 2be Shop on your way out. There are several rooms over a couple of floors that sell not only beer but beer memorabilia, chocolate, road cycling gear, as well as Tin Tin and Smurfs memorabilia too.
